A bit of History

The Old Hall – A gift from the past

Old Durrumbul Hall was established on private land in 1911 and in 1921 was moved by bullock team to its present site. The journey of 1km took 8 days.

In 1981 a group of Main Arm families started a parent run day care group to provide a much needed service to the community.
The Durrumbul Hall committee allowed the old hall to be used as a space to hold the group.

After a year or so the day care group was so successful the Main Arm community decided a permanent preschool was needed and Durrumbul Preschool was born. The preschool shared the hall space with the community – there were wild community moon dances on the weekend and a quick change Monday morning back to preschool. There was no fencing, no rules and a couple of tin-can outhouses that had to be emptied Friday afternoon by the intrepid preschool staff.

In 1993 the new Durrumbul Hall was built and Durrumbul Preschool inherited the old hall as a permanent home. Parents and volunteers banded together and a new amenities block was built complete with flushing toilets and we’ve never looked back.

Our preschool was truly built by the community for the community.
